TBSI hosted a weeklong workshop from April 1 to April 5, 2019, for TBSI officials from TBSI-Shenzhen seeking to build a nanofabrication laboratory. The delegation hoped to learn information from UC Berkeley’s Marvell Nanofabrication Laboratory so as to build a better lab abroad. Bill Flounders, Executive Director of the nano lab at UC Berkeley, led the workshop for the delegation.

William Flounders, Executive Director of Marvell Nanofabrication Laboratory hosted the visit of Mr. YANG Hong, Vice Mayor of Shenzhen, to UC Berkeley. Vice Mayor Yang was accompanied by Mr. WANG Youpeng, Director General, Urban Planning, Land and Resources Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, Mr. ZHANG Xuefan, Director General, Housing and Construction Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality and Mr. QIAO Hengli, Director General, Bureau of Public Works of Shenzhen Municipality.

On June 17, 2018, Mr. WANG Weizhong, Party Secretary, CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee, visited UC Berkeley and the TBSI office in Berkeley. Mr. Wang met with Dean S. Shankar Sastry, College of Engineering, who shared his vision of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Intelligence Augmentation (IA). The 2018 TBSI workshop was successfully held on Jan 23-24 at the Sutardja Dai Hall, UC Berkeley. Participants include faculties from UC Berkeley, Tsinghua University, China and local business leaders for discussions on research, entrepreneurship and future opportunities.

Tsinghua University Council Chairperson CHEN Xu and other key Tsinghua members visited UC Berkeley on September 28, 2017. The occasion was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Tsinghua and UC Berkeley to initiate the planning of a new two-year dual-degree program of Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) to promote research and educational cooperation between the two universities.

On June 26th, the second annual Tsinghua Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) retreat successfully launched at the China Resources University located in Xiaojingwan, Huizhou. More than 200 attendees participated in the event, including more than 50 TBSI core PI’s, visiting scholars and visiting students from China and the United States, postdoctoral scholars, Ph.D. students, and administrative staffs.

TBSI-Berkeley held a retreat at The Lodge in Tiburon on April 29-30, 2017. Surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the San Francisco Bay and Angel Island, the retreat provided a forum for dialog and community building among TBSI faculty, students, and staff.

Professor Junqiao Wu (Lab 1A: Nano Energy Materials) was recently promoted to Full Professorship in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering. His paper, titled Anomalously Low Electronic Thermal Conductivity in Metallic Vanadium Dioxide, was published in Science and highlighted by the Office of Science in the U.S. Department of Energy.
