UC Berkeley Extension and TBSI is Seeking to Collaborate

On June 17, 2018, Mr. WANG Weizhong, Party Secretary, CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee,  visited UC Berkeley and the TBSI office in Berkeley.  Mr. Wang met with Dean S. Shankar Sastry, College of Engineering, who shared his vision of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Intelligence Augmentation (IA).  Mr. Wang and Dean Sastry recognized the responsibility and abilities of academia in providing options to help the development of government policies.

On Feb. 7th, 2018, Co-Director of TBSI, also Professor at EECS, UC Berkeley, Connie Chang-Hasnain, has been named to NAE (National Academy of Engineering) for contributions to wavelength tunable diode lasers and multiwavelength laser arrays.

The 2018 TBSI workshop was successfully held on Jan 23-24 at the Sutardja Dai Hall, UC Berkeley. Participants include faculties from UC Berkeley, Tsinghua University, China and local business leaders for discussions on research, entrepreneurship and future opportunities.

Before the end of Fall 2017, TBSI held a Year-End event on December 8th by having a poster session at TBSI office downtown Berkeley and hosting a dinner at Agrodolce Osteria.

Tsinghua University Council Chairperson CHEN Xu and other key Tsinghua members visited UC Berkeley on September 28, 2017. The occasion was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Tsinghua and UC Berkeley to initiate the planning of a new two-year dual-degree program of Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) to promote research and educational cooperation between the two universities.

On June 26th, the second annual Tsinghua Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) retreat successfully launched at the China Resources University located in Xiaojingwan, Huizhou. More than 200 attendees participated in the event, including more than 50 TBSI core PI’s, visiting scholars and visiting students from China and the United States, postdoctoral scholars, Ph.D. students, and administrative staffs.

The 5th Academic Advisory Committee (AAC) meeting of the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) was held on May 25. The meeting was held simultaneously in Shenzhen and Beijing, China and California, USA through remote conferencing.

TBSI-Berkeley held a retreat at The Lodge in Tiburon on April 29-30, 2017. Surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the San Francisco Bay and Angel Island, the retreat provided a forum for dialog and community building among TBSI faculty, students, and staff.

Professor Junqiao Wu (Lab 1A: Nano Energy Materials) was recently promoted to Full Professorship in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering. His paper, titled Anomalously Low Electronic Thermal Conductivity in Metallic Vanadium Dioxide, was published in Science and highlighted by the Office of Science in the U.S. Department of Energy.

On the morning of February 20, Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute signed a cooperation agreement with Huawei Company. On the basis of the principle of "win-win cooperation, co-construction and sharing", the two sides reached a comprehensive cooperation and long-run development agreement on collaborative innovation in the field of smart grid technology.

The spring 2016 Industry Advisory Board (IAB) Meeting of the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) was held on April 13-14. This successful meeting took place at the Faculty Club at University of California, Berkeley. A total of 15 members from industry and 60 TBSI core Principal Investigators and UC Berkeley faculty and leadership participated in this meeting.

An agreement signed today in Shenzhen, China, launches a partnership among the University of California, Berkeley, Tsinghua University and the Shenzhen municipal government promoting research collaboration and graduate student education.
