The 2018 TBSI workshop was successfully held on Jan 23-24 at the Sutardja Dai Hall, UC Berkeley. Participants include faculties from UC Berkeley, Tsinghua University, China and local business leaders for discussions on research, entrepreneurship and future opportunities.
As the beginning of the workshop, Co-Directors of TBSI, Professors Connie Chang-Hasnain and Lin Zhang introduced Chancellor of UC Berkeley, Carol Christ and Vice President & Provost of Tsinghua University, Bin Yang for their welcome remarks as two schools have been collaborating on many projects in different areas and have achieved remarkable results.

Plenary talk sessions were given by Professor Shankar Sastry, Dean of the College of Engineering at UC Berkeley; Professors Chenming Hu, Jay Keasling, John Ngai, Bin Yu and Dan Fletcher from UC Berkeley, and Professor Peter Lobie and Wenwu Zhu from TBSI.

Posters were presented by TBSI students to show their research outcomes and panel discussions were arranged with panelists from different fields, including Caroline Winnett (Executive Director, SkyDeck, UC Berkeley), Xiaoyu Miao (Vice President of Technology, Playground Global), Dylan Ren (Partner of Diligence Capital), John Zysman (Professor Emeritus in the Department of Political Science, UC Berkeley), Lee Fleming (Professor of IEOR, UC Berkeley), Coleman Fung (CEO & Co-Founder, Blue Goji) and Bjoern Hartmann (Professor of EECS, UC Berkeley). These panel discussions provided a platform for audience to directly communicate with the panelists for questions and views such as the future economic development along with technology advancement and international competition vs. cooperation.

Another highlight of the event was the invited talk by Professor Ron Gronsky at the dinner. In addition to his significant success in Engineering, he has great interest in music and is able to perfectly apply engineering theory into sound producing, which has pushed further the understanding of music instruments.

The workshop is ended with the closing remark by the Vice Chancellor for Research of UC Berkeley, Randy Katz. He shared astonishing achievements by the researchers at UC Berkeley and great future prospects the campus is aiming for.
