On the morning of February 20, Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) signed a cooperation agreement with Huawei Company. On the basis of the principle of "win-win cooperation, co-construction and sharing", the two sides reached a comprehensive cooperation and long-run development agreement on collaborative innovation in the field of smart grid technology. According to the agreement, the two sides achieved a cooperation intention based on the new technology and theory research of energy internet (such as IOTIPS, renewable energy, energy management, big data, and other fields) and developed multi-layered cooperation in products, scientific research subjects, implementation of projects of smart grid and intelligent photovoltaics.
As the core of innovation of the third industrial revolution, smart grid is an inevitable choice to promote China's energy revolution and improve the efficiency of energy use. It involves interdisciplines such as energy, electrical engineering, materials, information technology, thermal engineering and data science. It is a leading-edge subject in the current international academic circle and a focus of scientific and technological innovation in the industrial circle. The famous American economist Jeremy Rifkin puts forward the concept of "smart grid" in his Third Industrial Revolution: "We will need to create a smart grid, so that hundreds of millions of people can produce green renewable energy in their own homes, offices and factories. The spare energy can be shared with others, just as we share information on the web now.”
During the conference, Zhang Lin, Co-Associate Director of TBSI, briefly introduced TBSI's vision of establishing a global, transformative network of transdiscipinary research and education insitute to the representative of Huawei. Shen Xinwei, a postodoctoral scholar in the Smart Grid and Renewable Energy Laboratory, presented the main research direction of TBSI in the field of energy & power highlighted the latest research progress in the field of multi-energy synergism.
Subsequently, Sun Hongbin, Director of the TBSI Smart Grid and Renewable Energy Laboratory, Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Tsinghua University and Distinguished Professor of Changjiang Scholars of Ministry of Education, discussed with Huawei on the development strength, development prospects, and further cooperative opportunities of the institute in the field of electric power. Professor Sun Hongbin is the academic leader in China's energy internet field, the initiator and executive chairman of the Energy Internet Xiangshan Science Conference, the Vice Chairman of the WFEO Energy Committee and the Chairman of the “Energy Internet” Working Team of the WFEO Energy Committee.
Professor Sun said in the signing ceremony: "At home and abroad, the smart grid is developing into the stage of implementation and application. The field has a great industrial potential in the future. TBSI has a strong faculty and scientific research strength while Huawei has a good internationalization platform and innovative technology. In the future, the two sides can carry out an in-depth cooperation in terms of joint development of products, joint expansion and application of markets, global brand promotion, personnel training and etc. in various fields such as clean energy, distribution network, AMI, big data, comprehensive energy internet, and promote the implementation of energy internet with a global vision.”
Cong Peijin, General Manager of Energy Solutions of Huawei, said that: "From a global perspective, the constructions of the distribution and utilization of electricity both present a momentum of rapid growth. It is also clarified in the 13th Five-Year Plan of the State Grid that the distribution and utilization of electricity will become the priority of investment in the future. Huawei hopes to carry out an in-depth cooperation with TBSI in the schemes of distribution and utilization of electricity energy and in the complementarity and innovation of energy internet."
The signing of this cooperation framework agreement will help TBSI establish a strategic cooperative relation of complementary advantages with the industry, carry out the technology development and industrialization demonstration and promotion with an in-depth integration of energy & power and information communication through the combination of production, learning and research, and to further improve our new energy system with intelligent infrastructure, interactive productive consumption and sufficient information flow; it will also contribute to China's energy system and technological revolution in terms of promoting the establishment of energy market system, driving the innovation and revolution of the energy science and technology as well as the development of energy-related industries.
