TBSI Successfully Held Second Annual Retreat

On June 26th, the second annual Tsinghua Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) retreat successfully launched at the China Resources University located in Xiaojingwan, Huizhou. More than 200 attendees participated in the event, including more than 50 TBSI core PI’s, visiting scholars and visiting students from China and the United States, postdoctoral scholars, Ph.D. students, and administrative staffs.

At the retreat’s opening ceremony, Professor Feiyu Kang, TBSI Co-Director, introduced TBSI to the 200+ participants at the event.

Professor Kang expressed that the institute will work closely with industry to bring resources to the Dual Degree Master’s Program and doctoral programs at TBSI, foster industrial leaders, and promote scientific research and technological transformation.

In the area of development and recruitment, Director Kang announced that the number of full-time faculty joining the TBSI family in the coming year will reach up to 20. He noted that the caliber of the international faculty recruitments at TBSI is at an even higher standard of the Tsinghua headquarters campus.  

Finally, Professor Kang concluded his opening remarks on this motto, “learn positively, think deeply and share happily”. He encourages all students to follow this motto and pursue higher standards of education and research excellence here at TBSI.

Following Professor Kang’s opening address, Professor Lin Zhang, TBSI Associate Co-Director, gave his opening remarks. Professor Zhang first expressed his gratitude to the PI’s travelling all the way from UC Berkeley and Beijing to attend the retreat. He also recognized the TBSI executive team for their hard work and efforts in the planning of the retreat.

Professor Zhang notes that TBSI has gained the strong support of the Chinese Government and Shenzhen Municipality. As a mark of TBSI’s growth, Professor Zhang announced that a new campus will be constructed in the beginning of next year. The new campus will be expanded to 3-4 times of the current size of the TBSI campus at the Intelligence Industrial Park Campus in the Nanshan District of Shenzhen. The development of the new campus will pave the way for the institute’s education and research expansion by enhancing and strengthening the scale of TBSI’s education programs and scientific research facilities.

Following the opening remarks was the lab updates from the 17 TBSI laboratories. TBSI is organized into 3 research centers: Environmental Science and New Energy Technology (Center 1), Data Science and Information Technology (Center 2) and Precision Medicine and Healthcare (Center 3). The 3 centers comprises of 17 multidisciplinary laboratories. Each lab reported on their latest scientific achievements and development in the past year and presented their future directions and activities.

In the student presentations portion of the retreat, 57 TBSI doctoral candidates demonstrated their scientific achievements over the past years in the form of lighting pitches and research posters. The 57 students enthusiastically showcased their innovative research projects and findings to the PIs and students presented, eager to draw their votes and support for the prestigious TBSI Future Leader Scholarship award.

Student exchange at the TBSI retreat

 The second annual TBSI retreat presented a unique forum for learning, dialog, and exchange among TBSI faculty, students and staff. Over the course of the week, the TBSI community had the opportunity to learn more about the institute’s latest developments, laboratory achievements, research discoveries, industrial collaborations, etc.

 The activities of the retreat established an informative and transdisciplinary platform that bridges different disciplines, academia and industry, and international researchers from diverse cultures. This retreat made great strides in TBSI’s mission of building a world-class transformative research and education partnership and cultivating global leaders in science and technology.
